ACTIVITY ONE: Geography and Environment

Website: "Information on Capital Cities"


1. Click onto the website, then click onto the capital city you have chosen to research.

2. Do not print any of the web pages !

3. Open a new document in Word and type the name of the city (and state) at the top the page.

4. Return to the Web Page by clicking the Netscape symbol in the tool bar below the screen.

5.Skim read the first three sections: the Introduction, Facts at a Glance, and History.

6. Read the same sections again more carefully, taking notes* while you read.

7. When you have finished taking notes, Save the Word document on disc, then print it, and shut down your computer.

8. Check the pronunciation and meaning of any unfamiliar words in your notes that you intend to use in your oral presentation.

9. Check that you can find your city on the classroom map of Australia.

10. Using your notes, and the classroom map of Australia, give a brief presentation to the class about this city (max 5 minutes).
 

* How to take notes
  (1) In Netscape:
 
  • Highlight a part of the text
  • Click on Edit menu
  • Click on Copy
  • Return to your Word Document

                    (2) In Word:
 

  • Click your cursor onto the page where you want the text to go.
  • Click onto Edit menu
  • Click on Paste
                             Then return to Netscape to make further notes.
