How to Create a Web Page with Composer

CREATING A SIMPLE WEB PAGE USING NETSCAPE COMPOSER

Open Netscape Communicator

Open Communicator on the top Tool Bar and select Composer

Creating the background

Format
Page Properties
Colours and backgrounds
Background
Select a background of your choice by browsing files on hard drive or floppy disc if you want to use an image, or choosing from the built in colours
OK

The font

Pull down the ‘Variable Width’ box and choose a font eg Comic Sans
Select size using the pull down size box or Heading box
Select the colour for your font by pulling down on the small black box

Text

Type in desired text
Centre this by Format then Align then Centre or by using align box on Toolbar

Adding an image

insert image icon
Click on Choose File and find folder with image you wish to use
Highlight the file name
Select Open then OK

Inserting dot points

Select Bullet List from the Tool Bar
Type text desired for first bullet point
Hit enter and type in second dot point
Align the 2 dot points left or centre as you wish

Creating links

highlight the words or image you wish to link
Hit the Link icon on the Tool Bar
Navigate to the file that you are linking to on your hard drive or floppy disc

copy (CTRL + C) and Paste (CTRL+V) an existing web address into the narrow white box (the Location field) at the top of the page and click OK
Save the page and check your link is working by clicking on Preview on main Tool Bar

Example:

To make a link, type the words 'Free Images' and select it.
Copy (CTRL + C) this address: http://www.lisp.com.au/~david_t/back1.htm
Hit the Link icon on the top Tool Bar
Paste (CTRL+V) the copied address into the narrow white box
OK
the text 'Free Images' has changed colour, and is underlined to indicate that it is now a link
Save the file and check if the link works by clicking on Preview on main Tool Bar

Inserting a plain horizontal line

Select H. Line on Tool Bar to finish off page with a simple ruler line.
You can add one of these at the top – or anywhere you like.

Extensions

You can use bold, italics or underline as in any word program but remember italics can be hard to read and underlining anything will make it look like a link.

Using tables is useful for more complex layout. The borders of the tables can be visible or invisible and the border lines can be thick or thin. You need to think carefully before creating your tables because they are hard to modify once constructed. For Notes on Tables click HERE.

Text and images can be wrapped round each other or aligned to the right, left, above or below.

Images can be links too; simply select the image on your page before clicking on Link on the Tool Bar and keying in the url address you want it linked to OR browsing for the file on your hard drive or disk

Name all your files for web pages carefully – no spaces, or capitals, and less than 8 characters - and keep them filed in their appropriate folder.

Composer is a pretty basic html editor but it allows you to create a

perfectly satisfactory page(s) and have a lot of fun –

play around and enjoy it!
