STEPHANIE JARRETT

Hi. I'm Stephanie Jarrett just grabbing 5 minutes from my busy schedule to do this homework assignment. I can't believe how busy we've been in Interlink this term. For those of you who may not know Interlink is an ELLS jobseeking program for professional migrants. It is wonderful work - you get to learn the details of everybody's profession - we have to teach people how to communicate exactly what they did in their jobs for the purposes of interviews, writing selection criteria etc. We use the STAR principle - that is the SITUATION, the TASK they actually performed, ACTION they took to get the job done or solve the problem, the RESULT they achieved, so that they communicate real examples of what they actually did. It is fascinating - I tell the students that as the audience I have to be able to run a movie in my head of that person doing some part of their job. Otherwise people are very apt to waffle on with things like "in my previous job I worked in a team with many other people on many different projects" and you never get to know what they actually did. We do lots of other interesting things including a lot on a one to one basis. We get some good results in terms of people getting jobs - and that's what its all about.
