Taking Communities/Alado

This is a virtual classroom tool that is being made available to us by Alado.Net in Chicago, and the Adelaide Institute of TAFE who have leased a 20 seat room for this year, and who have kindly allowed use of their room for the early part of the project.

When you access it for the first time iVocalise software will automatically download and install itself on your PC. (Mac users - sorry - it won't work!) There is a record feature with this tool that allows all users to record the session but you have to Windows Media Player 9 for it to work.

This tool is reasonably good at getting through most firewalls.

You can use any log in for this tool, and you don't need a password.

Elluminate

This is in the Rolls Royce category of virtual classroom tools, and the room we have access to is my virtual office in LearningTimes (LT). When you go to http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=235631 you select the enter button and on first entry it will prompt automatic download and install of quite a lot of Java that may take up to 10 minutes.

If you are an LT member, and the software has successfully installed, and it manages to find its way through any firewall (problematic!), you will be up and running and able to use this room.

Compued

This is an Australian tool from a company in Perth that is based on the Chatterbox voice chat tool which has been around for some years. It is a 5 seat room, and if you go to http://www.compued.com.au/coghlan, enter 'guest' as the access code, and then you can enter any screen name and you should be able to enter the virtual classroom.
